Oracle's Database 10g Release 1 is the best relational database with XML-handling capabilities. IBM's DB2 Universal Database 8.1 and Sybase ASE 12.5.1 come in tied for second, while Microsoft clearly has its work cut out for itself with its SQL Server 2000. Oracle Database 10g provides rich methods for consuming XML, supports all three methods of XML storage and interaction with WebDAV repositories, provides a comprehensive searching functionality, and generates XML files quickly and efficiently. Sybase ASE consumes XML documents well; supports all three methods of XML along with good indexing capabilities; offers various options for creating views and encapsulating queries, although it does not support Xquery; and generates XML files quickly, although it does not have on-the-fly XSLT transformations. IBM's DB2 Universal Database quickly and intuitively imports XML files into its database, supports all three methods of XML, creates views but does not have Xquery support, and generates XML files quickly and has XSLT transformation capabilities. Microsoft SQL Server does not store structured XML and loses its granular XML search functionality during the import of XML data.
