Methods for testing the viability of OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 as a replacement for Microsoft Office are described. Testing was conducted by 'eWeek' Labs on OpenOffice.org's namesake OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 suite and Microsoft Office 2003 at the site of 'eWeek' Corporate Partner FN Manufacturing. Testing was done by users making a transition from Microsoft Office to Office 2003 or to the open- source OpenOffice.org suite. Three user groups had different levels of expertise with Microsoft Office and they ran on an IBM ThinkPad T41 loaded with OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 or Microsoft Office 2003. All participating users currently use Microsoft Office 97 or Office 2000 for daily tasks. Testing concentrated on usability and training, but the feasibility of running an open source office suite on enterprise desktops was also a priority. Two groups of users tested Office 2003, and one of the two had taken part in a test of OpenOffice.org that was done last year at FN Manufacturing without the participation of 'eWeek' Labs. The other group had used neither OpenOffice.org, in any version, nor Microsoft Office 2003. A third group, which had no experience with any version of OpenOffice.org or with Office 2003, evaluated OpenOffice.org. A test script created by 'eWeek' Labs evaluated each office suite's ability to performance users' every-day tasks, including creation of a macro in the word processing application, addition of graphics to a presentation, and use of formulae in a spreadsheet application.
