The results of the 'eWeek' comparison testing of Microsoft Office 2003 and OpenOffice.org's namesake suite, which was done by three groups of users (all of whom presently use Office 97 or 2000) show that advanced users push Microsoft Office to its limits and are always looking for more functionality, which OpenOffice.org may not be able to provide. For other users, however, OpenOffice.org can be easily customized to make it very similar to their currently used Microsoft products. A spokesperson for FN says OpenOffice.org is used on shop- floor computers for document viewing and that it works well for those tasks. All testers liked Office 2003 and believe that remaining with Microsoft Office would probably provide the least problematic upgrade path. Should FN implementation OpenOffice.org, training on OpenOffice.org would be done in-house, and internal resources and expertise with OpenOffice.org would be used. Word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation applications in OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 and Microsoft Office 2003 were tested separately, but some testers' evaluations applied to entire suites. Testers who use Office 2003 said there were not many differences between Word 2003 and earlier versions of the Microsoft Word processor, but one tester did not like Microsoft's context-sensitive smart-tags feature and pointed out that a key combination had changed. Many other reactions are described, and tips for testing the feasibility of open-source applications in an organization are provided.
