IBM has reached new heights with its VE (Virtualization Engine), which gives enterprises the ability to let UNIX-based servers be partitioned like mainframes. VE, a combination of hardware and software, in essence lets computer systems replicate themselves, a technique that is designed to make management more efficient, reduce costs, and increase server use. VE will be embedded in all of IBM's forthcoming Power 5-based pSeries and iSeries servers. Beyond partitioning, saving enterprises money, and improving utilization rates, IBM says that simplified and unified management is one of the critical goals of its VE. IBM leveraged the core virtualization technology from its existing mainframes and embedded it into its UNIX servers. Tivoli's provisioning and management tools will be embedded in VE. Its grid functionality, which will control the distributed systems, is based on the Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA) and WebSphere.
