Microsoft .NET and Information Builders' WebFOCUS are highlighted in a discussion of the efforts of Wall Street firms to 'get a better view of the data held in their hands.' Topics covered are enterprise application integration (EAI) and enterprise information Integration (EII). Lack of funding has stopped wide implementation of full enterprise integration data, says an expert, since many companies will not spending money on middleware or infrastructure, considering the recent state of the economy, and because such projects have 'no direct value to the customer.' However, the companies that have made the leap are already seeing benefits. Guardian Group of Funds (GGOF) has deployed database EAI as a way to link information and to avoid data redundancies. GGOF chose WebFocus, which is a hub-and-spoke data warehouse model, and vendor Information Builders migrated information from a Microsoft SQL Server customer relationship management (CRM) database, a fund-accounting data from Sybase, and record-keeping from DB2. The new central data warehouse resides on a Microsoft Windows NT server. A newer paradigm known as EII is also being discussed in data management circles. EII emphasizes data availability over disparate environments and applications, and users are beginning to build virtual warehouses that allow them to publish the data, which can be provided upon request.
