Title: Venerable IBM server carries on

IBM is putting a lot of stock in its iSeries platform. The midrange box supports numerous platforms such as Windows, open source, and Web services. IBM will invest more than $5 million over the next two years to enhance the iSeries, which is the updated platform of its AS/400 system. While IBM has worked to make it more flexible, the big vendor must still convince network managers that the perceived challenges should not become stumbling blocks to adaptation. On its end, IBM vowed that it would continue its collaboration with independent software vendors to help them develop more applications for the iSeries. IBM is evangelizing about the iSeries' stability and reliability, especially as it strives to advance the iSeries to support next-generation technologies. IBM will need to push the virtues of giving network managers options. The iSeries must prove that it can offer capacity on demand to make the total cost of ownership worthy, beyond its ability to support multiple systems, virtualization, and logical partitions.
