Title: Laser Optics Try to Bridge Last Mile

Omnilux is developing a free space optics (FSO) laser-based technology to solve the one-half last mile problem, reaching homes and businesses with high speed fiber optics. It is based on a patent owned by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The system would use short distance laser beams mounted on buildings, and would be much cheaper than the $500,000 to $1 million cost for a mile of optical fiber. Both UCSD and Qualcomm have invested in Omnilux. Data transfer speeds would be 100 Mbps, greatly exceeding both DSL and T1, and close to fiber capabilities. Analysts say that the market is small, however, and that phone companies already installing fiber and new radio frequency technologies like WiMax limit its market potential.
