Cordis, Boston Scientific, and Medtronic are drug-eluting stent makers that will likely be interested in a newly designed stentenna, a micromachined stent integrated with microsensors that monitor blood flow and pressure in a wireless manner. The devices do not use batteries. They also can be designed to send signals to patients and physicians when problems occur. It is compatible with standard stents and procedures. Adding a drug to the stent from within polymers that are placed on the stent, the renarrowing rate, or restinosis, drops to between 5 percent to 10 percent, which is a huge improvement from the current practices. The stentenna is powered by radio waves, which allows patients to monitor their blood flow and pressure via a handheld radio-frequency device. Stentennas are good news for the U.S. stent market, which is expected to grow from approximately $2.5 billion in 2003 to $2.5 billion in 2005. Venture capitalists have been enthusiastic in their response to the commercial potential of stentennas.
