Japan's Council for Science and Technology Policy stated that Japan's nanotechnology budget for fiscal year 2004 would rise 3.1 percent, or $875 million. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the two main government ministries that account for approximately 90 percent of Japan's nanotechnology research programs will receive significant budget increases. METI's nanotechnology research budget got a boost from $96.7 million in 2003 to $101.4 milion. METI promotes near-to-commercialization research and development. Its overall science and technology budget is $1.15 billion. Nanotechnology and related materials research is one of priority for areas as METI. MEXT's nanotechnology research funding will reach $242.8 million, up from $228.8 million over the last year. Much of the money will be used for fundamental materials research and a new drug-discovery program. MEXT supports fundamental research for projects that have a 10-year horizon.
