PalmSource has released Cobalt, the sixth version of its Palm operating system. Cobalt is based on its acquisition in 2001 of BeOS. PalmSource will continue development for the fifth version, Garnett, but not for Palm OS 4. Cobalt adds multitasking and multithreading features, memory protection, and an increase in memory addressable by applications to 25MB. The biggest change is that Cobalt is a modular design. Developers will be able to design plug-ins more easily. Cobalt also features SSL and TLS to enable secure e-commerce transactions. Other new security features are an application data synchronization tool and an authorization manager. It has synchronization architecture to support schemas, and is supported over Bluetooth, Serial, and USB. PalmSource also offers an Eclipse-based version of the Palm OS Developer Suite that can be used for all Palm OS versions. Maintaining both Cobalt and Garnett will enable PalmSource to continue to support a wide range of currently used PDA applications. Support for Palm OS-based Web services is not included in Cobalt.
