Title: 'I sing the segment wireless' or 'Come in, remote apps!'

The early days of wireless implementation saw the failure of wireless applications because they were too focused on pure wireless, said Ojas Rege, director of Mobile Solutions for Sybase's iAnywhere Solutions division. The end result was applications that simply did not work or had performance problems. Many developers are still trying to get field service applications out, despite the trial-and-error method. Successful field service applications have occurred when developers focused on having the applications be dispatch-driven. Customer relationship management (CRM) applications, specifically for sales force automation, were popular in 1997. Those developers began to wonder if they needed a full database on mobile devices to successfully do data collection. They also began to wonder if search and retrieval functions would be necessary. Answering these questions, said Rege, will help drive the direction of future applications.
