With the proliferation of XML, application developers are wondering if they need to buy XML-specific tools for their projects or rely on legacy development tools from Borland, IBM, Microsoft, and other vendors that have varying levels of XML support. The answer lies on what kind of project is being developed. Chances are, using existing tools and building on that is likely the more cost-efficient way to approach the development task. However, when the project involves integration and developers need the technology to cover all the diverse databases and other information types that need to be integrated, then choosing an XML-specific tool is probably the best approach. Another benefit of an XML-specific tool is that it can help developers to visualize what they are attempting to accomplish. Another factor to consider is that buying an XML-specific tool that integrates with other tools can then become part of a developer's overall toolkit and can be used in future projects. One example is Altova's XML Spy product, which integrates with Microsoft's Visual Studio.NET. Oracle and IBM, particularly with its WebSphere platform, also have integration tools.
