Early adopters of Linux are finding major benefits. E*Trade Financial has switched from a Sun UNIX system to IBM Intel servers running Linux. E*Trade says that using Linux has improved customer service. Other financial firms are beginning to use Linux extensively. Linux is very good for applications with high throughput and low processing requirements, like trade-order- management. Spending growth on Linux applications in the capital markets is expected to grow from $400-million worldwide in 2003 to $1.7 billion in 2007. Some of the current spending is still for basic infrastructure to run Linux applications. The new Linux kernel 2.6 will be a growth driver because of its improved scalability and faster memory access. One remaining hurdle to more widespread adoption is resolution of the licensing issues. Linux is also being used by a few institutions for risk management.
