Companies are increasing requiring new PBX systems to have a migration path to Internet telephony. Phillips Infotech predicts 50 percent of new systems in 2004 will have IP capability, indicating a convergence of communications technologies. Convergence means a movement toward uniformity and focus. Convergence is important for simplifying business processes and lowering IT costs. Network convergence involves combining voice, data, and video on an IP, EtherNet, or optical network. IP networks have become the networks of choice for this convergence because of the Internet. Communications convergence involves enhancing telephony by adding new multimedia features, options, and increasing mobility. Communications convergence lowers cost by migrating functions to a single platform. Applications convergence leverages the IP multimedia technology to transform the way people communicate and collaborate. Convergence eliminates boundaries and increases worker productivity while lowering operating costs. In 2004, IP telephony has become a mainstream technology that enables convergence.
