Many companies' enterprise business logic still resides in legacy Cobol applications. Aucucorp's extend 6.1 and Micro Focus's Net Express 4 with .NET help companies extend the use of these ancient applications by giving them a way to get those Cobol applications to interoperate with current distributed computers. Each product has its benefits and liabilities; companies need to determine what their needs are to see which product would be a best fit. Net Express 4 with .NET was designed to move Cobol to the .NET framework. extend 6.1 works best for companies that want flexibility in their distributed platforms. Both have XML mapping tools and good data access and file support. Neither provides CICS migration support. While extend 6.1 does not have direct Cobol Web service calls, Net Express 4 with .NET does, through its Enterprise Server. Extend 6.1's strength is its ability to distribute Cobol applications across multiple platforms, but its weakness is that it needs better integration of its IDE with component connection architecture. Net Express 4 with .NET, on the other hand, is strongly integrated with Visual Studio .NET, which is good for debugging cross-language applications.
