Ecora's Ecora Patch Manager, BigFix's BigFix Patch Manager 4.0, PatchLink's PatchLink Update 5.0, St. Bernard's UpdateExpert 6.1, and Gravity Storm Service Pack Manager 2000 are reviewed patch management products. None gets better than average marks, but all are easy to use, with the exception of Gravity Storm Service Pack Manager 2000, which is also the lowest-cost product reviewed. Ecora Patch Manager and Gravity Storm Service Pack Manager 2000 are agentless, while BigFix and PatchLink use agents, and St. Bernard uses either model. Users are advised that the political and technical challenges of agent versus agentless approaches and how they pertain to your environment must be factored into your purchasing decision. Only Ecora and PatchLink allowed testers to roll back patches, even though a survey of 600 readers put rollback ability at the top of their priority lists. PatchLink Update 5.0 supports the most non-Microsoft platforms and also supports many more applications than the other reviewed products. Only Ecora does not support scheduled installations, DirectX, and distribution/aggregation points. All the products but St. Bernard's can schedule downloads, but only Gravity Storm lacks Active Directory support and is also the only application that does not support all Microsoft Office applications. Ecora Patch Manager is the editors choice, especially for customization features, powerful group administration functions, customization and addition of groups with the system management tool, and repository management.
