Storage Technology, Sun Microsystems, and StorEdge all have products to support a hierarchical storage-management (HSM) system. For some vertical industries, such as health care, retrieving data is critical. Problems arise when some organizations, such as hospitals, attempt to store and manage large amounts of data. These health care organizations must be able to access and retrieve data quickly and be able to analyze that data for treatment. Health care is also unique in that the amount of data is growing exponentially. A hierarchical storage management (HSM) system is a good solution for employing multiple types of storage media. Higher- value data is stored on more expensive media, while rarely accessed data would be dropped down to low-cost media such as tapes. These systems are attractive as hard-disk storage continues to fall in price. Sun Microsystems is creating a software and hardware architecture to help customers deploy a storage infrastructure more easily.
