An analyst describes his experience with getting rid of msBlast on his home computer. msBlast is one of the first worms or viruses that did not require the victim to open an attachment. Although an effective antivirus program can catch most computer virus propagation, leaving protection against the rest to luck is no longer possible. The user was able to use a Symantec removal disk to remove the virus at home. However, the experience showed him that Norton AntiVirus (NAV) is not enough to guard against viruses in all circumstances, including PCs that are not firewall-protected, which may be the case in home offices. To protect such systems, operating system (OS) patching should be kept up to date, and shared directories that contain executables or any important data should never be write-enabled. A personal firewall should be used to quarantine attachments. Regular backups are also a must. Some home users do not think they need a firewall because they are not concerned about data that might be stolen from the home computer. However, some invaders merely enjoy seeing how much chaos they can create, and the computer also can be used to spread malware to other computers. Moreover, distributed denial of services attacks are launched by thousands of zombie computers that have hidden infections, and, if the service provider can track the sources of such attacks, the innocent victims will also be found. Among topics covered are the advisability of using a hardware router with a powerful firewall on a broadband connection or home network, and why spyware/malware protection should be used.
