The solo Webmaster often has to do the tasks of a visual designer, human computer interaction (HCI) specialist, writer, and programmer, which means that the Webmaster has to be 'a generalist who is also an expert.' The tasks may be intimidating to some, but for the professional who wants to learn many new disciplines, solo Webmastering can be challenging and rewarding. Topics covered include the definition of a solo Webmaster (a person who has no colleagues available with whom to discuss important decisions related to the Web site or intranet site); areas in which current expertise and skills are required (graphical design, content, and technical issues); how to stay current with technologies and new information about Web development; tips, tricks, and insights and creating an action plan; using Really Simple Syndication (RSS); and learning and doing, including tapping the knowledge of co-workers. To stay current, solo Webmasters must be excellent time managers and must concentrate on efficiency. They set priorities and schedule time into the work week to stay current. Among highlighted tips and tricks highlighted are those related to tool choices, locating a mentor, consulting with experts, networking with other Web managers, sticking to priorities, and deciding which newsletters can be monitored each day or week.
