Dr. John Halamka, CIO of the Harvard Clinical Research Institute, Harvard Medical School, and the CareGroup Health System, chose M- Business software system integration software from AvantGo, which is now part of Sybase iAnywhere Solutions, for a wireless communications integration project; M-Business Anywhere Developer Edition also is available free. The system was deployed as a part of Dr. Halamka's mission to use technology to better the 'workings of medicine.' Halamka set out to extend all the existing systems that he could, and his team constructed a set of e-learning applications with the assistance of ArchStream Solutions. Sybase M-Business server allows users to rapidly produce content and to prototype and deliver it. Palm and Microsoft Pocket PC were considered, but were found to be too platform-specific. The standards-based, vendor- independent, 'runs-anywhere' architecture was designed to attract end users, since Harvard Medical students can use their own mobile devices, which connect to information via an 802.11b connection or in offline mode. AvantGo M-business software is being integrated into Sybase iAnywhere Solutions' broader offerings, since M-Business Anywhere Developer Edition permits developers to give their Web applications mobile support with a minimum of re-coding, says Ojas Rege, senior director of mobile solutions at iAnywhere.
