Microsoft and its partners RSA Security and VeriSign are trying to promote security measures that will not only guarantee ease of use but boost security as well. Smart cards and one-time password tokens are being touted as a more-secure, second-layered way of logging on to computers and networks. RSA Security unveiled its token called SecurID. Designed for Microsoft Windows, SecurID gives users a temporary password every minute. The password is used in combination with the user's secret personal identification number to log on to Windows. VeriSign, another Microsoft partner, will provide a service that lets companies manage authentication-device provisioning. Users will be authenticated over the Internet. VeriSign will support authentication devices such as tokens and smart cards from various vendors. Rainbow Technologies unveiled its RfiKey, a USB token embedded with radio frequency identification technology. Aladdin Knowledge Systems combined its eToken Pro USB smart card with an LCD display, letting users sign documents digitally and log on to the networks in a secure fashion.
