Quest With GIS is a Louisiana K-12 education program that familiarizes kids with GIS and GPS, while working with state emergency agencies. Since schools are often used as emergency shelters, students collect GIS and capacity data at their their schools and other neighborhood buildings, and provide it to the Office of Emergency Preparedness (LOEP). LOEP says that the program helped it to collect far more data than it would have been able to otherwise. The primary database for Quest is the Geographical Information Center. Students connect through a Web interface. Students enter the the latitude and longitude of the school, then relate it to other neighborhood locations. Students then studied the geography and school attributes determine its suitability as a shelter for specific emergencies. More Louisiana schools are participating. Often, teachers continue about technology after the program ends. Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial software and support is used.
