IBM is penetrating other vertical markets as it unveils middleware customized for the health care, life sciences, retail, and telecommunications industries. Many companies in these industries use IBM's WebSphere to link and integrate firm Web sites with their back office systems such as inventory and fulfillment. Integration is often painful, involving third-party software. IBM is changing that process by configuring industry specific middleware. The new packages comprise WebSphere, DB2, Tivoli, Lotus, and Rational software. These new industries join other industries, such as banking, insurance, and financial services, in which IBM has already offered solutions. IBM is set to penetrate the automotives, electronics, government, energy, and utilities and consumer packaged goods industries. The retail systems have inventory management capability for the automation of inventory and shipment tracking. The health care products have patient and payer portals, and software for clinical data and health records management for collaboration and decision making. Life sciences suites have management tools for clinical trials and genomics data. Telecom products have the ability to integrate different support systems.
