Microsoft Office 2003's two most notable improvements are integration with SharePoint, its Web-based collaboration software, and support for XML. However, it is probably not worth upgrading from earlier versions if those two features are not important to the user. Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Service Pack 3 are required, so users with earlier operating systems will also have to upgrade the operating system. It also may run sluggishly on older systems. The XML tool is a good tool that has features comparable to Corel's XMetaL. Integration with Word works very well. Associating a schema with a document takes some effort, however. The integration with SharePoint allows multiple users to collaborate on documents online. It is easy to use and works well, but may require some training. Companies that are using other collaboration tools may not find the cost of upgrading for this feature justified. Other new features include better processing of metadata, and a digital rights management system.
