The visual effects team for 'The Matrix' sequels relied heavily on previsualization techniques to create the complex effects and camera angles. More than two hours of previsualization content was created. The technique helped plan how to integrated computer generated characters and effects, and which objects would be digitally created. The team also used it to plan where to place cameras for shooting the scenes. Previsualization was also used on 100 percent computer generated scenes to help with design and budgeting for each scene, saving much time. One scene was cut because previsualization determined the price would be too high. It took a year to create the previsualization for some scenes. Most of the previsualization was done in Softimage|XSI, but Alias's Maya was used for the siege scene. Previsualization was also used to create the Armored Personnel Units (APUs), robotic extensions of human characters. Computer generated motion was imported to a motion-control simulator to create the effect. Previsualization is a both a planning technique and a method of imagining.
