A combination of visual effects and physical sets were used to bring Dr. Seuss's 'The Cat in the Hat' to film. Seven studios were used to create the effects, with Rhythm & Hues (R&H) doing most of the work. A wide range of effects, from 3D to compositing, were used. The most difficult effects were the fish, the water in the fish bowl, and the purple tornado. R&H used its own proprietary Voodoo and Wren software to create the fish, which featured many challenges. The water in the fish bowl was also a challenge, and R&H added a special plug-in to Side Effects Software's Houdini. Rendering was performed with Wren and raytracers. The mechanical crab that formed the lock on the box was created in Softimage/XSI. Compositing was performed mostly with Apple Computer's Shake, with some work done in discreet's inferno and R&H's Icy. Alias Systems' Maya Cloth was used to make a car cover. Compositing integrated the effects with live action. Pacific Title created the effects for the sky, and Soho Effects added computer graphics hair to the Cat in some scenes.
