The Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) has embarked on phase two of the development of a new Web. OASIS hopes that its Dataweb will be able to link and synchronize data, which would enable users to publish or subscribe to information. OASIS is trying to address the problem of sharing data, which requires the activation of multiple applications, an inefficient system. Dataweb is designed so that when one address gets updated, subscribing pages would also get the updated address. Other data could be programmed to have permissions and authorizations attached, which would let recipients link to it but not have the authority to change the data or pass it on. W3C's Semantic Web served as a basic model for Dataweb. The Semantic Web is a library based on the Resource Description Framework, a metadata system that describes, organizes, and categorizes information on the Web. The Dataweb seeks to use metadata to link information elements to one another. Both systems need to address the problem of describing information so that it can be shared across the Web. OASIS will tackle the third phase, which entails developing an XDI service dictionary, in fall 2004.
