Microsoft's .NET has its fans and detractors. Parts of .NET's platform have been more successful than others. Its support for Web services gets the highest praise. Microsoft has delivered on its promise to provide cross-platform XML messaging. It gives developers Web services tools in a neat package with easy interfacing. .NET was supposed to allow for the installation and uninstallation of Windows software without DLL conflicts and registry problems. While it has made software deployment easier, there are still issues that need to be resolved. Security remains to be a problem with .NET. The .NET infrastructure is supposed to complement traditional security measures. .NET's code access security prevents impersonators from using system resources accessible to the user being impersonated in a managed environment. The problem is that managed environments are few and far between. Future versions are trying to determine how .NET security policies can interact with traditional security measures to fine-tune security policies.
