Title: Major update for Linux kernel improves scalability, performance

Linux 2.6 is a major update that improves scalability and performance. Fedora Core 2 is expected soon, and the first test release of Fedora Core 2 is available for downloading. A similar, community-supported release of MandrakeSoft's Mandrake Linux 10.0 is also based on the 2.6 kernel and should be available in March 2004, with an official version available in April or May. The Linux 2.6 kernel includes a new anticipatory scheduler for I/O operations that increases system responsiveness and will be advantageous to desktop users. An improved threading model supports Native POSIX Thread Library (NPTL) with performance enhancement for extensively threaded applications, including Java virtual machines. A new process scheduler divides processor time among running programs, and new support is provided for Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA). With NUMA support in Linux, companies can move up to higher-capacity hardware without have to add a new platform for administration. Also described are Web resources providing more information about Linux 2.6; pre-emptiveness in Linux 2.6 kernel; and an availability schedule listing what can be expected in the 2.6 distribution that includes availability dates for Knoppix 3.4i; Red Hat Fedora Core; Mandrake Linux 10.0; SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4; and Debian Linux (no firm date or surety that 2.6 will be include in Debian's Sarge update).
