Title: Want to Stop Spam? Multiple Techniques in Unison is the Answer

HTML and IETF's Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) are highlighted in a discussion of the need to use of multiple spam-fighting techniques to successfully half spam. Highlighted methods available are connection filtering; SMTP filtering; content filtering; Bayesian filtering; universal resource locator (URL) domain black list; HTML tag filtering; delivery and processing rules; education of end users; and prevention of false positives. To prevent false positives, authentication authenticated users (those who provide a user name and password during the SMTP transaction) should be skipped at the receiving e-mail server to by-pass content filters. This is helpful in many corporate settings where not all users on the system are trusted to send out only non-spam e-mail. Service provider users' intentions are not as unequivocal and e-mail from authenticated users may also have to be scanned for spam. White lists can be used, which allow entry of all e-mail from a specific domain or e-mail addresses, and messages from trusted IP addresses also can by-pass filters. As for HTML tag filtering, the e-mail server can look for and filter out stipulated HTML attributes often found in spam, including those in comments themselves that include deliberately neutral words that spammers intentionally use to throw off the accuracy of statistical filters.
