MIT Media Lab's DakNet, a dynamically created network, uses wireless technology to provide asynchronous digital connectivity that could be the first step toward universal broadband connectivity. DakNet has been effectively implemented in India and Cambodia at one- quarter the cost of a conventional landline service. Recent advances in wireless computer networking, especially the IEEE 802 standards, have been very successfully for use in offices or urban hotspots and make broadband networks available at lower cost. Market data for information and communication technology (ICT) services in rural India indicate that asynchronous service, including voice messaging, e-mail, and other methods, could be more economical as a starting point for rural connectivity projects. DakNet is a wireless network that uses existing communications and transportation infrastructure to distribute digital connectivity to isolated villages that do not have a digital communication infrastructure. DakNet sends data over short point-to-point links between kiosks and portable storage devices dubbed mobile access points (MAPs). MAPs are mounted on and powered by a bus, a motorcycle, or a bicycle with a small generator. They can send data physically among public kiosks and private communications devices as an intranet and between kiosks and a hub for non--real-time Internet access.
