At the Xerox Imaging and Services Technology Center in Webster New York, a team of scientists developed a 2D color calibration method that blends the advantages of simple 1D transforms and CMYK-enabled, concurrent adjustment with 3D/4D. The approach can be used in future color printers to offer deeper, accurate color without an extensive increase in cost, staff required, or computing requirements. Calibration is reached via 2D transforms that take into consideration interactions among colorants. Such interactions are usually not taken into consideration in standard 1D transforms, an omission that restricts manufacturers to the control of one color or another. With its patent-pending software, Xerox's technology mathematically builds full-resolution 2D calibration tables, which can concurrently offer correction for each individual primary color and important color mixtures, including grays and flesh tones. With Xerox's color calibration technology, scientists could do printer color correction with the least possible number of added mathematical computations and computer space. When finished, the corrections were considerably improved for color accuracy and stability, as compared with conventional 1D calibration. The Xerox calibration method can be embedded at low-cost inside print controllers or printers because it needs only 0.5MB disk space. Applications include highly stale and consistent color output and color correction in LCD devices.
