Linux, says Jim Stallings, general manager for Linux at IBM, has been shown to run successfully on Intel, mainframes, and IBM solutions for IBM iSeries and pSeries. Stallings says he is responsible for continuing to expand IBM's Linux business and for demonstrating government use of Linux. IBM is going to fight the SCO lawsuit aggressively and is still determined to resolve the matter in court. IBM is not interested in settling out of court because the claim has no basis, explains Stallings, and SCO has not demonstrated the actual allegation. IBM is aware that Linux systems can be indemnified, but doing so does not resolve the primary issue. Most customers to whom Stallings has spoken are not asking for indemnification, but have asked for explanations of the legal case. When the explanation is provided, they decide that doing Linux is still important, and IBM continues to see momentum in Linux adoption. IBM's history demonstrates that the business does not leave customers dangling, but IBM does not want to force customers to do Linux in a specific way. SCO and its lawsuit will not disappear due to indemnification. IBM sees industries systems as an area of opportunity and will establish a clear message to customers regarding Linux security.
