Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is extremely expensive, costing into the millions, but the fact that many companies are preparing to implement RFID technology speaks to its overall benefits. Many companies already know that there will be obstacles and a steep learning curve, but there is a big move toward using RFID technology. RFID will touch a wide swath of an enterprise's business processes, from manufacturing and shipping operations to business-technology systems. In an effort to head off potential problems, many supply chain software and enterprise software companies have opened up testing facilities. Many are still gathering information and strategizing about how to implement RFID technology. However, while it seems an inordinate amount of planning and preparation is taking place, companies are realizing that implementing RFID technology will affect change management, IT infrastructure, and employee skills. Specialty vendors that offer RFID technology are Checkpoint Systems, HighJump Software, Manhattan Associates, RedPrairie, Savi Technology, and Wherenet.
