KDE Project's KDE 3.2, which is rated very good, is the most recent release of the full-functioned and intuitive desktop environment for Linux and UNIX. KDE 3.2 takes the desktop environment in a direction that will make Linux a viable enterprise desktop choice. Testers were impressed mostly with speed and improvements to the native file manager and Web browser. Konqueror is the best file manager on any platform, and as a Web browser is about equivalent to Mozilla; testers encountered a few minor page- rendering glitches. KDE 3.2 also has a better set of complementary applications, including the new Kopete multiprotocol instant messaging (IM) client and the Kontact e-mail and personal information manager. The KDE 3.2 platform, which is free and can be downloaded in source code form kde.org, also allows IM passwords to be stored and managed with the new KWallet password management application, which also manages passwords for Web sites that are accessible through Konqueror. Testers put KDE 3.2 through its paces on a machine running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 with the Konstruct application for automated code downloading and compiling and on a system running Fedora Core 1. KDE 3.2 packages are also available for other Linux distributions including SuSE Linux and Mandrake Linux. KDE 3.2 is rated excellent for usability, capability, and security, and gets good marks for performance, interoperability, manageability, and scalability.
