JPEG's JPEG 2000 codec is designed to meet growing demand for rapid image processing. The JPEG 2000 standard can offer a high- performance codec for facilitated integration into software products. JPEG 2000 follows the transform, quantize, and variable length code model, but almost all parts of its codec are different in one or another way. For instance, the variable length code is very different and has a resemblance to the bit-by-bit progressive JPEG method. The DCT (Direct Cosine Transform) at the center of JPEG is replaced by a wavelet transform that significantly affects other components. Color conversion is not unlike JPEG's, but JPEG 2000 is explicitly defined as a part of the standard, not a post- or pre- processing step. Another important difference is the inclusion of very different technology, including replacement of specific names for codec blocks, such as DCT, with general descriptive ones, such as intercomponent transform. JPEG 2000 is discussed in terms of its differences from JPEG in the following areas: pre- and post- processing; intercomponent transform; intracomponent transform; quantizations; Tier-1 coding; Tier 2-coding; performance primitives; interface and usage; and optimization of a JPEG 2000 sample.
