In the space of a year, IBM has made Rational's modeling and process approach the cornerstone of the IBM unified development strategy. Rational developed a unified approach to software modeling and processes, and also backs the IBM Eclipse development tool framework. Rational will oversee sales of a unification package called the IBM Software Development Platform, and IBM has been able to more quickly integrate Rational than Tivoli or Lotus. If IBM can reach its integration goals with the Rational suite at its IBM development labs, it is likely that customers' evolving needs will also be better supported. Several IBM spokespeople have voiced that conviction firmly at a recent press event on the first anniversary of IBM's purchase of Rational. IBM will take a more integrated that varied approach, says Buell Duncan, general manager of ISV and developer relations. Mike Devlin, general manager of IBM Rational, stated that the direction is practical and meant to allow IBM to meet the goals set by Steve Mills, senior VP and group executive for the IBM Software Group. Mills, who wants to componentize all the software in the software group, is speeding up the strategy. Rational integration with WebSphere had the highest priority, Tivoli integration will follow, and connections between development and deployment of substantial interest to customers.
