Title: Eclipse unleashed

The topic is effective use of the Eclipse development platform in enterprise IT organizations. However, such users will have to make their needs known to toolmakers. Before the announcement of an expected Eclipse Foundation spinoff, organizations could assume that Eclipse is only an extensible development environment for IBM's WebSphere product line. Eclipse and Microsoft Visual Studio or Borland JBuilder, among other widely used and able frameworks, had a reputation that seemed to downplay the opportunity for independent developers to use their abilities in complementary ways. Eclipse needs a convincing advantage, not only for technical abilities, but also an 'ideological appeal as an exemplar of the momentum of open standards.' Although it was criticized early on by a Sun executive, Eclipse swiftly gained popularity, and twice as many developers enrolled than had been enrolled for NetBeans as development partners. Novell has also signed on for Eclipse, and will use it as a cross-platform development environment. Sun is also considering coexistence or membership, and Java creator James Gosling has expressed the hope that NetBeans will be chosen as an environment of standardized interfaces for tools. Eclipse is now in the bright sunshine of development. Enterprise IT buyers can at last use it as a full-fledged platform for open source development if they inform toolmakers of their needs and wants.
