Computer Associates International's (CA's) BrightStor ARCserve Backup 11 for Windows gets good marks for usability, capability, performance, interoperability, manageability, scalability, and security. The stable and powerful department-level data protection tool backs up servers and has an enhanced interface that is more easily navigated than in earlier versions. Multiplexing is now provided to allow IT managers to use new tape drives efficiently. Data can be archived from BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Laptops and Desktops, and a new Report Writer provides considerable flexibility. However, backup interfaces cannot be consolidated between CA server and client-backup product lines. New multiplexing abilities permit IT managers to stream more than one multiple backup job to a single tape drive, and rather than waiting for the completion of each backup job, the ITmanager can simultaneously send up to four backup jobs to one drive. IT managers with many legacy servers can benefit from multiplexing to obtain the best performance, since multiple data streams keep the tape drive running and stop it from back- hitching. The impressive Report Writer allowed testers to analyze the efficiency of the backup process. Testers could create clear reports without the busy formats of prebuilt report templates, but prebuilt report templates are available for IT managers who do not want to create reports.
