The Linux 2.6 kernel is now available and being used in many distributions, and many in the open-source community are now concentrating on the next development and test kernel, which is called the 2.7 tree. For an early look at some of the concepts being considered for the Linux kernel, vendors made available a long-term list of possible enhancements for 2.7. Some would like to see more desktop functionality in the final release, which should be available sometime in 2004. For instance, a spokesperson for Oracle notes that the 2.6 kernel is a server release. Users can expect to see more desktop emphasis, which will be advantageous in allowing users to use Linux to run their clients effectively. Many patches on the serverside could be merged into the 2.6 kernel or move to 2.7. Basic clustering is also desirable, and Oracle's spokesperson is considering having a clusters name and cluster-wide timestamps. Among enterprises planning large Linux implementations is Amazon.com, which has plans to move its 14TB data warehouse to Linux servers running Oracle Real Application Clusters software, a move that would make Amazon a total enterprise Linux shop. A spokesperson for the IBM Linux Technology Center puts virtualization technology at the top of his wish list for 2.7, and a spokesperson for Computer Associates International (CA) says he would like to be able to virtually run other operating systems, including Microsoft Windows or UNIX.
