Quest Software's Quest Central 4.0, the most recent release of the database development and administration toolset, eases complicated tasks, especially for those working with different components in a heterogeneous environment. Rated very good overall, Quest Central 4.0 gets very high marks for ease of use and good marks for manageability, performance, reliability, setup, and value. Quest Central blends the most often provided features of the database lifecycle to allow users to use a single interface to generate data, write and diagnose SQL statements, management security and jobs, and diagnose performance issues. Tools are user-friendly and very robust, but Quest Central 4.0 could be priced too high for some users. Graphic administration is provided for DB2, Oracle, and SQL Server database through a single Quest Central 4.0 interface. The interface has a built-in SQL editor that permits users to write and edit stored procedures, views, and ad hoc queries. The tabbed panes of the interface allow the user to easily change code and see results and execution plans. For tweaking queries, the SQL Tuning Lab is inventive and powerful, allowing users to manually rewrite different versions of a query and view the difference in query cost. The benchmark Factory and Data Factory have been integrated into Quest Central, enhancements that will have great appeal to developers.
