A discussion of intellectual capital management systems/intellectual asset management (IAM) systems quotes Patrick Boylan, CEO of Intellilink Solutions, as saying that knowledge workers should be made aware of the value of sharing their expertise as part of the firm's intellectual assets. Boylan says, 'It really requires a change in work habits,' since most people have been trained to keep information to themselves as a way to 'increase their own value.' Many companies have built their own IAM systems, with results that may be anything from advanced systems that are integrated with other enterprise systems to basic spreadsheets. However, such companies as SAP are debuting IAM components as part of their overall solutions, a trend that is giving credence to the market. In difficult economic times, says an expert, companies have to consider all their opportunities, which may include increases in licensing opportunities. However, if asset management is not part of the business's encompassing knowledge management (KM) initiative, the opportunities cannot be confirmed. An IAM tells companies what they have and assists companies in identifying areas in which they can acquire intellectual capital from outside the organization. They also assist knowledge workers in pinpointing revenue-boosting measures and also when patents have been compromised.
