Sun Microsystems' Java, IBM's Eclipse, and Microsoft Visual Studio are highlighted in a discussion of efforts by the Java Tools Community (JTC) to unify Java development with the aim of promoting interoperability among Java tools and advancement of Java technology. IBM and Borland have not joined a group led by Sun and BEA, in which 11 software companies are participating to create the JTC. JTC organizers vow that the group will complement, not compete against the IBM-led Eclipse consortium for open-source Java tools. Members of the Java Community Process (JCP) are participating in JTC's promotion of 'toolability,' which aims to quantify the ease with which tools can be built around a specific standard or technology. The result of 'toolability' should be increased Java adoption. Goals of the JTC are as follows: to make standard Java application programming interfaces (APIs) more user friendly for tool development and promotion of adoption of Java Specification Requests (JSRs). The FTC will attempt to increase communications throughout the design time community so that all participants can access information and offer input for construction or extension of design time standards via the JCP. Bob Sutor, director of WebSphere software for IBM, says IBM does not view any roadblocks to use of Eclipse.
