Developers have growing confidence in such open-source database tools as MySQL's MySQL 5.0 database due to the increasing use of Linux and generous licensing terms, in addition to comparative ease of deployment for non-back-office applications. A survey that received responses from almost 550 developers reveals that MySQL use increased by 30 percent in 2003, while Microsoft SQL Server and Access use grew by about 6 percent. A programmer for SubscriberBase who has used mySQL for eight years says most commercial databases do not have the strong data format, replication, and scaling abilities found in open source. The programmer notes that any problem that arises with open source can be fixed by a developer. MySQL 5.0 will soon be released; one important upgrade is support for stored procedures that ease migration of legacy database applications from an application server without interference. Other upgrade features include new serverside cursor support for stored procedures accessibility, internationalization abilities and portability, and migration improvements. Toward the end of January 2004, MySQL will also debut new graphical database management and server administration tools at LinuxWorld. The company will also announce a partnership with Zend Technologies that targets the Hypertext Preprocessor segment.
